Sallie Stanley — Artist Statement
Having summered in Northern Michigan for most of my life, I have been exposed to the incredible beauty and mysteries of the Leelanau Peninsula from a very young age. I have found endless inspiration in the landscape both in Michigan and subsequent travels---always on the lookout for those Wordsworthian “spots of time” that give one pause, linger in the memory and haunt one with the sense of the sublime in the everyday. There is an energy and a joy that come from painting in the landscape---a celebration of life itself. Hopefully my paintings resonate that same energy and joy in the viewer.
After studying the works of Fairfield Porter, Edward Hopper, and Richard Diebenkorn, I have also become intrigued with the idea of painting large, more painterly acrylics of both figures in the landscape and still life in addition to my more traditional watercolors.
Teaching art to both children and adults has taught me how much art truly nurtures the human spirit.
