Frances Vail
It seems drawing and painting have always been a part of my life. Both of my grandmothers were artists, so this passion has been nurtured from the start with classes and workshops.
Having spent almost all of my summers in Door County, Wis. I enjoy capturing the feeling of light particular to an area and a "sense of place" in my landscapes. While all subjects are fair game, I am inspired by animals (wild and domestic), architecture, florals and people. I paint in oils, watercolor, acrylic and pastels. Continuing to take workshops strengthens my skills in observation, technique and striving to penetrate the essence of my subject. I'm intrigued with how learning new ways of working in one medium informs the way I paint in another and helps to keep my work fresh and vital.
In 2002 I began teaching classes and workshops at the North Shore Art League and in other studio's and private lessons. This has opened the door to the joy of sharing and inspiring other artist's to grow in both their skills and love of painting. And instructing art has been an incredible way for me to keep growing, pushing my own skills and finding new ways to both paint and to teach.
