Nancy Behles Artist Statement

My work celebrates my interest in drawing. Many of my paintings rely heavily upon contour lines to create rhythmic and repetitive elements. The subject that most captures my imagination is the human figure. I seek to create languid “figurative landscapes,” as in "Mary, Asleep" and to capture figures amid high contrast lighting, as in "Dave". Having lived my entire adult life with impaired vision has freed me to paint in a gestural manner. The figure’s attitude is paramount; accurate portraiture and small details in the surrounding environment are not. My brushwork, which can appear simultaneously frenzied and deliberate, is the “shorthand” I have created to depict the subject’s larger forms. I hope my paintings reflect the joy I have felt while making them. Any day spent painting is better than any other day!
