Rhoda Sterling: Artist Statement

I’m a great fan of ‘en plein aire’ and am happiest with my sketchbook and charcoal or pen and ink. I think I’m trying to capture a fleeting moment in time and have it forever.  The spontaneity of the moment has always called me and so watercolor or pen and ink seems to be a favorite media. Lately, I’m back using oils (the water soluble kind), which holds many delightful results.

I first learned to “see as an artist” many years ago at the North Shore Art League, went back to school; studied printmaking as a grad student at the Illinois Institute of Technology (still under the influence for design of Moholy Nagy) and eventually earned a masters degree in two-dimensional art at Northern Illlinois University, DeKalb.

My exhibits include Chicagoland art fairs, and local juried shows such as: Northbrook Library Regional Show, “Liberty, Freedom and the Written Word”, other Library exhibits, Wilmette Air Fair, Northbrook Art Fair, “Real People”, Woodstock, IL., ‘inchworks’ and many shows at NSAL. Earlier I was included in the Sales and Rental Gallery of the Art Institute of Chicago and drawing and print shows around town.

I spent about 20 hectic, prolific, satisfying/crazy years as a graphic designer/editor, heading my own agency, and in the late 90’s taught computer graphic design and its elements at Columbia College, Chicago and for six years at Oakton Community College. For the past six years it’s been a joy to be back at the League and return to my ‘art’ as my passion. All rights reserved. no images may be reproduced without permission of the artist.
