SUSAN UNDERWOOD Watercolors
As an observer and practitioner, I have been enchanted by watercolor for many years. The clear color, from pale, delicate washes to the deepest darks, is captivating. Because of its fluid nature, the paint takes on a life of its own as it mingles and mixes with different colors on the paper. The medium is endlessly challenging, and greatly rewarding when the end product turns out well. I enjoy painting a wide variety of subjects including landscapes, seascapes, figures, flowers, house portraits and dog portraits. I began studying watercolor in the early 1990’s at the North Shore Art League (NSAL) in Winnetka. Today I continue to take classes at the NSAL and at the Alain Gavin Studio in Evanston. For the majority of my paintings, I use photographs for reference, but I enjoy still life compositions and plein-air painting. My work is in private and corporate collections locally and in other parts of the country. Two of my paintings were featured by The Hadley School for the Blind, Winnetka, on its holiday cards for 2004 and 2005.
