Tricia McKenzie Morrissey’s Artist Statement

I grew up in a house filled with a creative spirit and energy all stemming from my Mom, who was an artist. Among all of the art projects my sisters and I created, I ended up falling in love with painting. I've been painting ever since and graduated with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

I strive to catch the spontaneous beauty of life, such as waves crashing on a beach, flowers unfolding in the garden or children scampering in the yard.  Through the use of acrylic paint, energetic brush strokes and vivid color, I attempt to re-create and illuminate the mood, feeling and loveliness of the fleeting moment. I prefer to paint instances in which children are just being themselves, unaware that they are being observed. Aside from painting children, I also enjoy painting still lifes and landscapes. I am greatly inspired by John Singer Sargent’s use of simple, direct color and brush work and Mary Cassatt's figure paintings.
