WORKSHOPS
Please sign-up at least three (3) days before the scheduled dates of workshops to allow teachers enough time for planning and preparation of any necessary materials. Participants signing up after that point will be accommodated if space is available.
Translating Photos into Paintings--Brian Sindler
This unique workshop combines the fundamentals of plein air (outdoor) painting with the utilization of photos, computer images and sketches to create small, medium and large paintings in the studio. Students will learn to simplify complicated images to create more powerful and attractive compositions. The instructor will demonstrate how to handle paint, make compositional decisions and mix color using a limited palette. Participants will learn how to use these techniques in their paintings of landscapes and other subject matter. Suggested for acrylic and oil painters of all levels.

Linoleum Printmaking Workshop--Judith Hladik-Voss
One of printmaking’s most rewarding techniques! No prior experience necessary. Judith will demonstrate and work individually with students of all levels. Students will learn all the necessary steps to produce their own designs-from note cards to fine art prints. This technique has applications in fabric and quilt art. Once linoleum printing is learned, it can be done in the home without a printing press! Suggested for both teens and adults.

LADIES NIGHT OUT! At Ease at the Easel--Nancy Behles
We provide the wine and cheese. You bring the fun. Grab your pals and join instructor, Nancy Behles for a relaxing, “no fear” approach to acrylic painting. Students will complete a 9”x 12” still-life canvas during this two hour session. All supplies are included. All levels welcome. Beginners and beginner wannabees—this is your chance to take a chance!

Glorious Fall Trees-Watercolor--Fran Vail
Trees, golden light on brilliantly colored leaves set against skies, crisp blue or dramatically stormy, all collaborate to create the ideal setting for watercolor painting. The rich colors of autumn foliage against vivid skies will be your inspiration, strengthen your understanding of composition, color values and mood. Learn techniques of brush-work and color mixing.

Monotyping Workshop--Judith Hladik-Voss
It’s a bit like drawing, and a lot like painting! It’s both! Join Judith in exploring the creative possibilities of this fun and easy printing process using both oil and water-based monotype techniques. Judith will demonstrate and work individually with students of all levels. Using the skills learned in this class, students can produce beautiful color prints at home without a printing press…or, monotype in black and white, then hand color their prints. The creative possibilities are endless. Suggested for both teens and adults.

MONDAY ART FUNdamentals (3rd-6th grade)--Nancy Behles
Color, line, texture, form and repetition–these are the basic concepts upon which all art is based. Students will learn to identify and manipulate these principles while creating beautiful compositions in a variety of media.

TUESDAY Painting & Drawing (5th-8th grade)--Victoria Nelson
Come and paint in a fun and nurturing atmosphere for students of all levels of ability and experience. Using acrylic paint, students will experiment and learn how to plan, develop and create a finished piece. Students will start with sketching and advance to painting.

THURSDAY Fashion Project (4th-12th grade)--Karen Perl
Learn to draw the world of fashion and design your own line of clothing like the designers on Project Runway. This class is dedicated to drawing and designing through the lens of fashion. It is not a construction class (there will be no sewing), but drawing and design are an important step to becoming a fashion designer. Students in this class will learn how to draw the fashion figure and use many different media to develop their own style through their work.

FRIDAY Kreative Kindergartners (ages 4-6 yrs)--Lisa Cinelli
Calling all Morning Kindergartners! Explore art through playful imagining and create projects including painting, printing, sculpture and more. Try new materials and meet new friends! Limit 8.

FRIDAY Art Abounds (1st-2nd grade)--Lisa Cinelli
Using a variety of materials, young artists work on projects that encourage children to use their imagination while learning about color, textures, paint skills and the use of materials. Each class features a new art adventure as they draw, paint, sculpt, and make prints, collages and more.

SATURDAY Watercolor for Kids (ages 8 + up)--Karen Perl
Explore different methods of working with watercolors as you create paintings from still life arrangements, and from your imagination. Learn how to control the application of the paint, then let go of the control and have fun watching what the paint can do. No prior experience is necessary.

Drawing to Painting--Lisa DePinto
This class is designed to help students transition from drawing to painting. The first class meeting will be devoted to preparation, demonstration and practice, followed by eight individual class projects, including landscapes and still lifes. A materials list will be provided upon registration.

Mixed Media-Expanding Your Palette--Karen Perl
Students will experiment with a broad range of art media to explore color and composition. Learn methods for combining graphite and colored pencils, charcoal, ink, gouache, crayons, markers and paints with bits and pieces of colorful papers, materials, and found objects to create drawings, painting, collages and mosaics using imagination and improvisation. Painting-All Media--Fran Vail
Bring your acrylics, watercolors or gouache paints or pastels and join us in our spacious studio on Monday evenings. This class will introduce students to the processes of painting in any media or to help advance skill levels. The instructor will demonstrate various media and will cover the use of materials, techniques and the elements of composition, color and design. Students will be individually coached while working on their own projects. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Contemporary Printmaking--Rita Price
Students will explore the potential of monoprint techniques as an introduction to printmaking. They will build their knowledge to incorporate relief, collage and Xerox transfer processes. Emphasis is placed on individual expression. Beginning and advanced students are welcome as instructor will work to meet individual needs and interests.

Painting StudioAM--David D’Arcy
This is a studio style painting studio class for students working in a variety of media at all levels. Students work from still life or subjects and themes of their own while learning about basic visual elements, methods and principles of art. Experimentation and individual expression encouraged.

Etching--Giedre Zumbakis
In-depth instruction is provided in all intaglio techniques, including etching, aquatint, mezzotint and color printing. The emphasis is on imagery development and individual expression. Photo etching is included with the new non-toxic Japanese photo sensitive plates. This class is open to beginner and advanced printmakers. Lab time included.

Multi-Level Printmaking--Paula Campbell
Beginning and experienced printmakers are encouraged to develop their work in various print media, including intaglio, relief and some stencil processes, as well as plate lithography. The instructor will work individually with each student. Lab time included.

Portrait and Figure Art—Lisa DePinto
Students will explore and advance their abilities to depict the clothed human form while drawing the model during long poses (3 class sessions). color, form, composition and expressive content. Longer poses (lasting three classes) will help solidify the stories that are to be told through the medium of your choice. All levels of ability are welcome.

Watercolor and Pastels--Fran Vail
Bring your paints or pastel projects you've started or would like to start and your enthusiasm. In this loosely structured class, the goal is to advance your level of comfort with watercolors or pastels by studying various materials, composition, techniques and useful tips as they arise from your individual projects. Methods for watercolor and pastel use will be explained through demonstrations throughout the course.

Etching --Jessica Feith
For the beginning and experienced printmaker, this course will focus on the traditional intaglio methods, etching, mezzotint and collagraph. Learn to create your image on a new, yet age-old, canvas–the metal plate which can be inked and printed multiple times and in different ways. Printmakers of all disciplines are welcome as instruction will be tailored to meet individual needs and interests. Lab time included.

Painting Studio--Nina Weiss
In this in-depth painting studio class, students will enrich and broaden their painting experience. Emphasis will include formal painting concerns such as composition, gesture, line, and color study. Painting techniques such as broken brushstroke, optical color mixing, layering and glazing will help students in their color exploration. Students will be encouraged to work in the paint medium of their choice. Individual instruction is tailored to help students of all levels advance at their own pace. Group critique, hands on demonstration, historical reference and visual aids enhance the classroom experience.

Watercolor--Peggy Macnamara
Instruction in the art of watercolor painting is geared to all levels. Advanced students are encouraged to continue their development. Drawing skills, color and subject matter will be explored. The layering technique will be taught for those interested. Frequent demonstrations complement individual student attention.

Gouache & Oil Painting--Mary Jo O’Gara
Oil painters and watercolorists alike will enjoy working in gouache, a very expressive and versatile water medium. If you are interested in trying something new, or if you are a beginning painter, you will enjoy the fresh look and the forgiving nature of gouache! Or bring your oil paints and brushes and work with Mary Jo on a project or two of your choosing. All experience levels are welcome. This class will cover traditional art-making theory about composition, value, and color, as well as the practical use of those theories through demonstration and group exercises. Time will also be provided each week for painting time to foster individual direction and expression. Come and learn about these exciting mediums!

Digital Photography with Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop--David Roth
Are you concerned or dissatisfied that your photos are not the way you want them? Have you been working with your digital camera, but can’t seem to get the images to transmit via e-mail or display or print the way you want them? This course will cover the basics of digital photography, software, the digital darkroom and printing. Discover how to recompose and resize photos, adjust colors, and add special effects and more. You will learn how to creatively use your camera to discover “your world”. Beginners are encouraged to participate. Requirements: a digital camera, Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop, a laptop computer (either PC or Mac) or pencil and paper.

FRIDAYS
Illustration--Lisa Cinelli
Let your pictures do the talking. Join this informative class based on a traditional illustration and design studio. Learn to complete art directed assignments and participate in critiques which will strengthen the impact and purpose of each illustration. Experiment with a variety of materials and techniques in black and white and full color to best illustrate each assignment. Artwork in an illustration is meant to educate, inform, or adorn. Build a strong illustration portfolio, keep track of the constant changes in the marketplace for illustrators, and begin to focus in on the right client base for your illustrations. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

ANY DAY--Independent study with NSAL Faculty
Private, one-on-one instruction and critique for those wanting personalized attention. Time is flexible. Schedule one lesson or a series.

Policies
PRO-RATED TUITION-There is no pro-rated tuition.
REFUNDS FOR CLASSES-Students are responsible for notifying the NSAL office if they wish to drop a class; not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal from courses or cancellation of tuition. Notifying your teacher does not constitute an official withdrawal-you must notify the NSAL office before the second class. An administrative fee of $25 will be charged for all refunds requested due to reasons other than NSAL cancellations.
REFUNDS FOR WORKSHOPS-A fee of $25 will be charged if cancelled up to 3 weeks prior, 50% of fee if cancelled 2 weeks in advance. No refunds if cancelled one week prior to the workshop.
OTHER CANCELLATIONS-Classes are cancelled when enrollment minimums are not reached. NSAL encourages students to register early. When minimums are not reached, students will be notified and full tuition refunded within three weeks. If a student is unable to attend class for any period of time, NSAL is not responsible for providing make-up classes. Make up classes for students who miss a scheduled class are at the sole discretion of the teacher and must be arranged with them. When an instructor must cancel a class, a make-up class will be scheduled. No refunds will be issued to students who are not able to attend a make-up class.
PHOTOGRAPHS-NSAL retains the right to photograph classes, students and work. NSAL has the right to reproduce images for publicity at its discretion.
RETURNED CHECKS-A fee of $25 will be assessed for all returned checks.
